FIELD PREPARATION
Travel Tips & Field Notes
Practical advice gathered from our overland journeys. Prepare for visas, transport logistics, and cultural etiquette to ensure a smooth, respectful journey.
Visas & Border Crossings
Navigating Central Asian Boundaries
Overland border crossings require patience and proper documentation.
- ✓Visa Requirements: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia offer visa-free entry for many passport holders. Armenia offers e-visas or visa-on-arrival. Check regulations 30 days prior.
- ✓Land Crossings: Border gates can be busy. Always print paper copies of your passport, e-visa, and hotel registrations (especially important in Uzbekistan).
- ✓Declarations: Keep any customs declarations safe until you exit the country.
Rail & Logistics
Booking Trains and Transport
Trains are the lifelines of the Silk Route corridors.
- ✓Afrosiyob Express: Uzbekistan's high-speed train connects Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. Tickets sell out 45 days in advance; book immediately when sales open.
- ✓Soviet-Era Sleepers: Trains like the Astana-to-Almaty line offer a nostalgic, slow travel experience. Choose 'Kupe' (4-berth closed cabin) for a balance of safety and comfort.
- ✓Ride Hailing: Download Yandex Go before arriving. It is the Uber of Central Asia and Caucasus, preventing fare gouging and language barriers.
Currency & Finance
Managing Cash on the Road
Cash remains essential, especially in traditional bazaars.
- ✓Pristine Bills: If carrying US Dollars to exchange, ensure notes are crisp, new (post-2013 series), and completely free of marks or tears. Exchanges frequently reject imperfect bills.
- ✓ATMs: Major cities have reliable ATMs, but card reader errors are common. Carry a backup card from a different network (Visa and Mastercard).
- ✓Local Som & Lari: Always keep small denominations of local currency for taxis, public transit, and bazaar purchases.
Cultural Etiquette
Respecting Heritage & Customs
Understanding local values makes for rich travel encounters.
- ✓Sacred Spaces: Modest dress is mandatory. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques in Uzbekistan and Orthodox churches in Armenia and Georgia.
- ✓Women's Head Coverings: Women should carry a light scarf to cover their heads before entering active religious sites.
- ✓Greetings: A handshake and a hand over the heart is a polite way to greet locals, particularly in Central Asia.
Health & Food
Staying Well on Overland Paths
Adapting to local climates and culinary rhythms.
- ✓Water Safety: Avoid tap water. Drink only bottled or filtered water, and use it for brushing teeth as well.
- ✓Dietary Choices: Central Asian cuisine is meat-intensive (mainly mutton and beef). Vegetarians should seek out local flatbreads (Non), fresh tomato-onion salads (Achichuk), and seasonal dried fruits.
- ✓Hydration: The steppes and deserts are dry and arid. Carry a reusable insulated water bottle to stay hydrated in summer.
Packing Essentials
Wanderer's Gear Checklist
What to carry for a multi-week overland odyssey.
